Goal 5: Drink enough filtered water every day

Why do this?

We all know we need water to survive. But if you’re anything like me, you might be drinking just enough to survive, and not enough to be cleansing out your system and restoring its health on a continual basis. Water helps our body to detox and no matter how healthy we eat we will always be ingesting substances through our food or skin or air that need to be filtered out of our body. I personally believe when substances are not continually filtered out that they can build up in our system and that that is where our health problems begin. Drinking water is key to aiding this process. It helps our organs work more efficiently and as a result of cleansing out our system, it might even give a boost of energy.

The common rule is to drink half of your body weight in ounces. That means if you weigh 150 lbs, divide that by two (75), and that’s the number of ounces you should drink. I found the easiest way for me to do this was to measure how many ounces are in my glasses at home and how many ounces are in my favorite water bottle. I keep a glass by the sink and everytime I go into the kitchen I drink a glass and every time I go out a drink a full bottle. That keeps me just above the recommended amount (I personally feel like I need a little more than the recommended amount). Finding a system and being intentional helped me realize that I wasn’t drinking enough as well as finding a way to ingest the right amount.

Secondly, filtering your water is only going to eliminate how many toxins your body needs to filter out. Some of the toxins in tap water have been shown to be carcinogenic in large quantities but are allowed by the government as long as they are kept to minimal amounts. For instance, chlorine is necessary to keep the water free from even more harmful bacteria. However, ingesting chlorine has been linked to a whole host of health issues. I’m just thankful I have the option to filter it out! If you’re still using tap water, look into a filter that eliminates chemicals while still keeping the natural minerals. The best one I found is Berkey Water Filters.

Bonus: Try a shower filter! Research has shown that we might be absorbing more chlorine into our bodies by taking a shower than by drinking it. This is an easy fix by purchasing a filter on Amazon and screwing it into your shower head.
